Webcast Technology Layers

March 9th, 2008 | by admin |

Webcasting is the process of transmitting in real time, either live or archived feed to a user over the internet. webcast programs technology, which makes webcasting possible, is made up of different layers.

The first layer is the equipment that actually captures the video. This may range from expensive remote controlled cameras to inexpensive webcams. The second layer is the hardware that stores the video in a particular format and in the form of a file. This may be optionally inbuilt into the first layer.

The third layer is the software that converts the file stored from the first layer into a stream that can be transmitted to the user over a fourth layer called the broadcasting server.

An example of such software is Linux which has inbuilt capabilities to transmit live video feed.
